Our Mission
Maȟpíya Lúta - Red Cloud embraces Lakȟota and Jesuit Catholic values and teachings to grow as a community through education, spiritual formation, Lakȟota language, art, and culture.
Maȟpíya Lúta - Red Cloud is a vibrant educational and spiritual organization grounded in its vision to foster leaders within a dynamic Lakȟóta and Jesuit Catholic community. Its mission—to embrace Lakȟóta and Jesuit Catholic values and teachings to grow as a community through education, spiritual formation, and the Lakȟóta language, art, and culture—guides every aspect of its work today. With four schools serving nearly 500 students, Maȟpíya Lúta - Red Cloud offers a rigorous, culturally rich education that prepares young people to lead with knowledge, faith, and pride in their culture. The organization also provides pastoral care to nearly 800 families and operates The Heritage Center, which supports more than 300 Native artists annually, strengthening cultural identity and economic opportunity through the arts.
This work continues the legacy of Chief Red Cloud, whose vision more than 130 years ago was for Lakȟóta children to "walk in two worlds"—to thrive in a changing world while holding firmly to their cultural roots. His efforts led to the founding of the original school in 1888, and that vision lives on through Maȟpíya Lúta - Red Cloud's integrated approach to education and community development. Today, Maȟpíya Lúta - Red Cloud stands not only as a testament to his foresight but as a powerful model of how tradition and innovation can come together to build a stronger future for the Lakȟóta people.
